Rachel L. Moore, MD, FACS, FASMBS

Rachel L. Moore, MD, FACS, FASMBS, is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Executive Council, an elite group of the top bariatric surgeons in the US elected by their peers. She speaks frequently at both national and international scientific meetings.

She is the ASMBS State Chapters Committee President and the founding President of the Louisiana chapter of ASMBS. Dr. Moore participates in many other ASMBS committees including insurance, access to care, and private practice. Dr. Moore is also the secretary of the Louisiana chapter of the American College of Surgeons, after serving two years as its Treasurer.

Dr. Moore has a special interest in the emerging field of bariatric endoscopy (weight loss procedures done endoscopically through the mouth). She performs both intragastric balloons and also primary endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG). Dr. Moore has been an instructor for the intragastric balloon Orbera since 2015 and travels the country teaching other doctors how to place Orbera. She is a respected researcher and participates in several clinical trials, including one for a new intragastric balloon which is not yet FDA approved.

Philosophically, Dr. Moore feels that obesity is a chronic disease and that patients are all different from each other, so she offers a spectrum of therapies. Some patients are on weight loss medications, some receive non-surgical procedures through the mouth, and some have laparoscopic surgeries like LapBand, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, or laparoscopic gastric bypass. The patient and surgeon talk together about medical history and goals to choose a treatment plan.

Dr. Moore had a nomadic childhood as the daughter of an Air Force General. She attended The University of Alabama as a Presidential Scholar, then the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School. Her general surgery residency during the Charity Hospital days of LSU surgery was where she met her husband. It is her sixteenth year as a surgeon with Surgical Specialists of Louisiana. She lives in New Orleans with her husband, bariatric surgeon Michael Thomas, and their three children ages 12, 9 and 6.
