Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty, also known as the Accordion Procedure, is a non-surgical weight loss procedure similar to the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, however, with an ESG, the stomach is accessed through the mouth using an endoscope. This means there are no incisions or sutures. Most patients go home the same day.
The flexible endoscope is used to place sutures in the patient’s stomach reducing its size and capacity. None of the stomach is removed but it’s structure is reduced to the size of a banana. This allows patients to consume significantly less food, absorb fewer calories and feel full faster.
Following the procedure patients will begin a liquid diet and gradually advance, to a normal, healthy diet. This gives the sutures time to heal.
In addition to the reduced amount of food the patient is able to eat, a commitment to a healthy diet and regular exercise will assist with long-lasting weight loss.
Because ESG doesn’t require any surgery, there are numerous benefits including a reduced risk of complications, no incisions or scars, and a quicker recovery time. ESG can also help resolve serious weight-related problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.
Do I Qualify?
ESG is an option for patients who choose a non-surgical approach to weight loss. You may be a candidate if you are significantly overweight and are at least 18 years of age. Please know that ESG, like all weight loss procedures, requires a commitment to a healthier lifestyle to ensure long-term success.
