According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of American adults are obese. The number is rising in children as well, with nearly one in three kids considered overweight or obese. Whether you are experiencing obesity yourself, or have a loved one who is working towards a healthier body weight, there are many ways to help combat this epidemic and show your support in gaining control over this widespread disease. SSL’s Dr. Moore, Louisiana’s ASMBS President, will be heading the New Orleans Walk From Obesity Charity Walk on May 11th at Pontiff Park. Please join us for this opportunity to make an impact against obesity and its related illnesses.
Obesity is an epidemic that affects all age groups, races, and sexes. More than just a number on the scale, obesity can bring with it emotional distress, physical pain, and health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and high cholesterol. A recent study by the American Heart Association even suggests that the odds for developing cancer rise by 50% if you are overweight. Considering over a third of our population is already obese, with some projections suggest that nearly half of our country will be by 2030, it’s important to tackle this issue now.
On May 11th the Surgical Specialists of Louisiana will join a statewide effort through Walk From Obesity to raise awareness; Lafayette, Monroe, and Baton Rouge will be hosting their own walks at the same date and start time. Walk From Obesity’s mission is to provide education, prevent obesity, fund research, and provide treatment to the millions of Americans who are struggling with weight related issues. Money earned from the walk will go towards raising awareness about obesity and the need for better treatment and prevention efforts. Even if you cannot complete the walk, your support through donations or by cheering on a family member or friend is appreciated.
If you are interested in registering to walk or making a donation, please visit our webpage to learn more. Sign up with friends, walk with family, or come by yourself to show your support. We look forward to joining with you in taking steps towards eliminating obesity!
